SUNFLOWER CHALLENGE 2023: WEEK 9 - Fertilising

How familiar is your team with fertiliser?

Danny Clarke and Fran Lawton will cover the best fertilisers for sunflowers and how often you need to feed your sunflowers.

Where to get fertiliser?

Potassium fertiliser is recommended for flowers and general hardiness. The other kinds include nitrogen (for green leafy growth) and Phosphorus (for roots and shoots). The RHS has a fantastic introduction to fertilising and all the varieties if you want to learn more.

There are many benefits to fertilising you sunflower, it will encourage the sunflower to bloom and it will help give your sunflower the right nutrients to grow taller and have more flowers. However, it is optional so will you get the team to fertilise your sunflowers?

As well as feeding your sunflowers, make sure the team keep your sunflowers well watered as they gets bigger! If it’s hot outside, we recommend watering your sunflowers early in the morning. Try to avoid watering in the middle of the day as the water can evaporate.

Let us know whether you fertilise your sunflowers and tick off this week on your calendar. Keep up the great work, and we’ll be in touch next week!
